The former site of a large clay mining operation from 1856 until 1927, this park offers a unique blend of historic and natural interest. This land was set aside in the early 1980's as a State Park Preserve. Today, Clay Pits is the only place on Staten Island where reminant oak-pine barren habitat can be found. Birding here any time of the year can be a rewarding experience. Make sure to visit the Park Head Quarters for trail maps, and more information about this wonderful park.
