From late fall until mid-spring waterfowl can be found in Lower New York Bay/Raritan Bay. Make sure to check the rock jetties for purple sandpiper, and scan through the numerous gulls for rarities. Eared grebe, harlequin duck and Barrow's goldeneye were all found off this strip of beach during the 1990's. During winter finch invsion years red and white-winged crossbills and evening grosbeak have been found in the pines surrounding the last parking lot. Snow bunting can also be found in the dunes.
From March through September, all of the common species of wading birds can be seen flying to and from their nesting colonies on Hoffman and Swinburne Islands in the morning and evening.
